ALLOTMENT is the latest venture by mac birmingham to provide opportunities for new and emerging local visual arts talent to grow. The project has seen mac birmingham’s Arena Gallery divided into ten plots, eight of which have been assigned to a wide range of Birmingham-based curators and artist collectives, or ‘plot holders’. The remaining two plots have been assigned through a city-wide open call and the result of this will be announced at a celebratory event at mac birmingham on Thu 15 Mar, at which we hope you can join us, to mark the milestone opening of ALLOTMENT’s eighth plot, held by duo Sparrow + Castice.
An ALLOTMENT shed has been installed in mac birmingham’s public space and fresh soup and discussion with plot holders will be offered here between 2 – 5pm. The soup will be served in Milk, Two Sugars cups, from the holders of Plot 1, independent contemporary gallery TROVE, so you can enjoy a warming snack and take a piece of art home with you.
There will also be the opportunity to browse the selection of books in the shed library (part of the mac birmingham staff plot which is a response to the Brutalist architecture of Birmingham Central Library).
Other plot holders include local artist Dan Auluk, who will be demonstrating his blind-drawing in a live performance; Birmingham/Berlin-based Clarke Gallery, maintained by its founder Elly Clarke, which addresses the power dynamics involved in the buying, selling and collecting of art; children’s art project Moonbeams; Birmingham City University MA Contemporary Curatorial Practice students and a group from mac birmingham’s Next Generation programme.
